What did you do as a graduate in your first two years?

In my first year as part of the trials program team, I helped peg trial sites, prepared protocols and batch up treatments, organised spray and seed trials, co-ordinated with company reps, farmers and growers, assessed and harvested trials, created reports and presented findings.

In my second year I continued with this work, but also began managing my own trials where I co-ordinated all aspects of a trials from sowing to harvest and writing final reports of our findings.

What have you enjoyed about working with the team as a graduate agronomist?

I have enjoyed travelling throughout WA and seeing first-hand the WA farming regions and meeting growers and ag specialists from all over the state. I worked with a great team and travelling and working together felt like working with mates rather than colleagues.

During your graduate experience, what has been your key learning experience?

Not having any previous farming experience, gaining a critical overview of how farming in WA is conducted has been invaluable. My communication skills have improved considerably by working with my colleagues, participating in the training provided and presenting to farmers and industry representatives.

Where are you now after finishing the graduate program?

Throughout the graduate program, my confidence grew and I began to become interested in a regional branch placement with the aim of one day managing my own Delta branch.

As an initial step towards this goal, I have relocated to our Lake Grace branch as a Sales Agronomist where I help growers and customers with their farm input requirements, including ag chem, seed, general merchandise, animal health. I believe I’m furthering my agronomic skills and product knowledge to best help and advise growers.

What has been the best parts of being with Delta Ag?

The people I have met throughout the network and the strong friendships I have formed with colleagues across branches and divisions of Delta Ag has been a highlight. It’s great to be able to collaborate with my colleagues and learn from one another.

Has Delta Ag’s graduate program met your expectations?

Definitely. I have been able to work in a variety of areas and the program was tailored to my interests where possible. The program offered flexibility, training, guidance and I felt assured there would be a career pathway for me that suited my strengths.

Any words of advice for candidates thinking of joining our program?

It’s a great opportunity to get your foot in the door with a respected business and to see how the industry works and what types of ag roles are available. Participating in the program shows you what’s possible, provides flexible training and experience and a great way to pursue your career goals in the industry. Jump on board!
